How Does Hunting in South Africa Work?

In South Africa, hunting operates very differently than in many other parts of the world, everything is 100% privatised. There is no public land hunting; instead, all hunts take place on privately owned land. Nearly 95% of hunting areas are high-fenced to properly manage wildlife populations, with property sizes ranging from 2,000 acres to over 100,000+ acres. This model not only ensures healthy game herds and sustainable hunting practices, but it also plays a critical role in the fight against poaching, one of the greatest threats to wildlife in Africa. By creating economic value for game animals, landowners are incentivised to protect and conserve them for future generations.

What Animals can be Hunted at Elands River Safaris

Although Elands River Safaris offers a wide variety of game species to hunt, we don’t have everything available on our property. That’s why we’ve partnered with select concessions, giving our hunters the opportunity to pursue additional species and broaden their hunting experience.

Please note: If you wish to hunt an animal that is not available at Elands River Safaris, this must be communicated prior to your arrival in South Africa so that the necessary arrangements can be made.

Air fare is not included or covered for both the hunter and observer. Return tickets to the states, all round trip is roughly $1600 total.

Every hunter will have their own private room, but if they bring an observer, they will share with their observer.

Daily laundry services are included.

1. May I hunt with a rifle on this trip?
   No, this is a strictly bowhunting-only safari. We focus on the traditional challenge and skills of hunting with a bow and arrow.

2. Can I bring an observer or non-hunter with me?
   Yes! Hunters may bring one observer or non-hunter for an additional fee of $1,500. Observers enjoy the full safari experience but may not hunt themselves. Observers may be with their hunter at all times through the trip, from walking and stalking to sitting in the blind.

3. What species are included in the package?
   Your package includes one each of Zebra, Red Hartebeest, Blesbuck, and Impala, with no trophy fees for these animals.

4. Can I swap included animals for other species?
   Yes, substitutions are allowed at the 2026 trophy rates. For example, you can trade all four included animals for one Kudu if you prefer.

5. What is the best time of year for bowhunting in the Eastern Cape?
   Our trips are scheduled during the prime hunting season when game is most active and weather conditions are favourable.

6. What type of accommodations can I expect?
   You’ll stay in a luxury hunting lodge offering comfortable rooms, hearty meals, and a warm, welcoming atmosphere.

7. Is transportation provided during the safari?
   Yes, airport transfers from Port Elizabeth are included, along with transport during all hunting activities.

8. What is the group size?
   Groups are limited to a maximum of 4 hunters per trip, ensuring personalized attention and an intimate experience, with one observer per hunter allowed.

9. Are meals and beverages included?
   Yes, three meals a day, snacks, and beverages (including alcohol) are all included in the package.

10. What should I pack for the trip?
    We recommend bringing your bowhunting gear, comfortable clothing for variable weather, sturdy boots, and personal items. A detailed packing list will be provided upon booking.
